The Summary:

Small moments can seem insignificant until they change the course of a life forever. The sound of a bulldozer. A chance meeting at a gas station. A gust of wind through a chime. Benign events become something more when viewed through the lens of fate.

Emma Santori is a prisoner of tragic memories. Locked in a spiral of depression, she leads a desolate and empty life, trapped in her decrepit home. Rooted in routine, she’s numb and vacant. As a lonely Catholic school teacher, her only joy comes from her young students. One Saturday morning, her isolation is infiltrated by a mysterious architect building a home beside hers.

That man is Eric Wilder and he’s keeping a secret that’s destroying his life. Filled with guilt and self-loathing, he’s forced to move often. He chooses the small northeastern town of Pine Lake as his latest refuge, and hopes to make a successful attempt at starting his life over. As always, he’s unable to make that happen.

That all changes when he meets Emma.

She finds herself drawn to Eric when she accidentally bumps into him, but Eric’s unfazed by their first meeting. When a gust of wind brings these two people together once again, Emma discovers Eric’s secret. She’s forced to battle between her Catholic faith and her desire for this stranger.

Their attraction is intense and they soon discover they’re each lonely and longing for what the other has to offer. As their friendship blossoms, Emma realizes her passion and lust for Eric are the remedy to her depression. Eric discovers his feelings for Emma are the only antidote to his secret burden.

They begin an erotic journey, which leads these beautifully broken people to discover that love can be both righteous and wicked.

Paparazzi, vodka cocktails, and sex. Welcome to LAlaland.
Winifred Chapman isn’t thrilled with the idea of her ten year reunion, and especially not the idea of returning to LAlaland. Even in the midst of her thrilling career, she’s managed to avoid LA as often as possible, which is saying a lot for a world-renowned fashion designer. She has a life which women everywhere would envy, and has everything she needs . . . or so she thinks.
Anthony Ricci was the most popular guy at Westlake High, and the one Winifred thought would never look twice at her. A former professional athlete, he now runs a successful Italian restaurant in New York City. When they run into each other at the reunion and give in to a widely passionate night, Anthony decides he wants more than what Winifred is willing to give.
Hating being known by the men she’s dated or slept with, Winifred has learned to take what she needs from men without investing emotionally. When she discovers Anthony’s old desire for her and disappears after their night together, he refuses to give her up.
Will he be able to show her that love doesn’t have to be a battle, or will LAlaland prove to be enough to destroy her carefully constructed walls?

Obvious Child by Warren Cantrell - Blog Tour

Available from TWCS, Amazon, B&N, iTunes and Kobo - April 3rd, 2014

The Summary:
Sam Grant doesn’t want to be famous, but he doesn’t have much of a say in the matter.

On the verge of graduating from college with his master’s in History, Sam and the rest of the world bear witness to the invention of time travel. Revealed via a YouTube broadcast, the brothers responsible for inventing time travel find their remarkable device coopted by the U.S. government. In a magnanimous gesture, the U.S. government holds a worldwide competition to decide who will be the first time traveler in history. This turns Sam’s world upside down after a half-baked joke application he sends in gets him accepted as a contestant for consideration.

Thrust into a political and media blender set to puree, Sam and his fellow contestants vie for the affections of a worldwide audience who will vote on the eventual winner. As the successive rounds of the contest pass by, and Sam tries everything from indifference to wild irreverence to get himself voted out of the competition, he finds that all his actions only serve to make him more popular.

As the contest goes on, Sam and the time travel project become more of a referendum on our society’s fascination with celebrity disasters, and what they will do to make sure the entertainment doesn’t stop anytime soon. Unable to get out of the contest via logical means, Sam learns to embrace the perks sudden celebrity provides, yet also suffers some of its typical consequences.

Stuck between two worlds—one he can’t handle, and another he can’t control—Sam finds himself considering a third option, one that has him confronting a time traveling reality that terrifies him to his very core.

Cover Reveal- Protection, A Forbidden Love Book Two By Elise de Sallier

COVER REVEAL
PROTECTION
A Forbidden Love, Book Two
By Elise de Sallier
Release: 1st May 2014

Summary:

He'll do anything to protect the woman he loves . . . but first, he must make amends for taking advantage of her innocence.

In the much awaited conclusion to Innocence, A Forbidden Love – Book One, Nathaniel, the Marquis of Marsden, is left reeling at the revelation of Lisa's royal heritage. Keeping her safe has always been his priority, and he is determined to protect her . . . from the King's machinations, their enemies, and her own overly generous nature if necessary.
Although overjoyed to be reunited with Nathaniel, Lisa fears she made a better mistress than she will a marchioness. Longing for a return to the freedom they shared when he thought her a commoner, she does her best to live up to his—and society's—expectations, but she's only willing to compromise so far. Being kept in the dark is no longer an option. Despite the unexpected pleasure she discovered in Nathaniel's arms, if there is one thing Lisa has learned . . .  ignorance is far from bliss.

About the Author:

Elise met the love of her life when she was only sixteen, married him three years later, and recently celebrated her thirtieth wedding anniversary. Needless to say, she is a big believer in living Happily Ever After. With a lifetime’s worth of experience behind her, Elise also believes great relationships don’t just happen, they take work . . . which doesn’t mean writing about them can’t be a whole lot of fun. After surviving all manner of health obstacles while raising a family and nursing her elderly grandmother—her writing namesake, though she’d have been shocked by her granddaughter’s steamy love scenes—Elise established a career as a counselor and family therapist. Seeking an escape from the stresses of her work, she discovered the world of fan fiction, and her timid writer’s muse began to make its voice heard. Two point three million hits, twelve and a half thousand reviews, and an e-mail from an acquisitions editor at The Writer’s Coffee Shop later, and Elise’s life found a new and fascinating direction. A romantic fiction addict from way back, writing her own historical and paranormal romances—and having others read and fall in love with her characters and the worlds she creates—is a dream come true. Elise likes to see her characters grow, experience passion and adventure, tackle some difficult issues, and find lasting love . . . eventually.

Finding Anna Book 1
by Sherri Hayes

Summary:

Stephan has lived the lifestyle of a Dominant for five years. After several rebellious teenage years, it gave him the stability and control he had been seeking after his parent’s death.
As president of a not-for-profit foundation, he knows what his future holds and what he wants out of life. All that changes when a simple lunch with his college friend and Mentor, Daren, leads him to buying a slave.
Thrust into a situation he never thought he’d be in, Stephan can’t walk away. He is compelled to help this girl in the only way he knows how.
Brianna knows only one thing, she is a slave. She has nothing. She is nothing.
Can Stephan help Brianna realize that she is much more than just a Slave?

About the Author Sherri Hayes:
Sherri spent most of her childhood detesting English class. It was one of her least favorite subjects because she never seemed to fit into the standard mold. She wasn't good at spelling, or following grammar rules, and outlines made her head spin. For that reason, Sherri never imagined becoming an author.
At the age of thirty, all of that changed. After getting frustrated with the direction a television show was taking two of its characters, Sherri decided to try her hand at writing an alternate ending, and give the characters their happily ever after. By the time the story finished, it was one of the top ten read stories on the site, and her readers were encouraging her to write more.
Six years later, Sherri is the author of six full-length novels, and one short story. Writing has become a creative outlet for Sherri that allows her to explore a wide range of emotions, while having fun taking her characters through all the twists and turns she can create. She is most well known for her Finding Anna Series about a young woman rescued from being a sex slave by a wealthy Dominant. The third book in that series, Truth, released July 25, 2013.

Praise for Slave:
"Slave is one of the most emotionally charged, mentally stimulating and body shattering romance novels I have ever read. It is so much more than a story about human trafficking, sexual slavery or BDSM; it is a tale full of redemption, kindness and hope." www.thesubclubbooks.com

Wow! What an emotional story!
I'm a sucker for a "captive" story. Brianna is only 18 and has lived as a slave - she has been broken down and has no idea how to function in normal society as a regular person. When her "Knight in Shining Armor" purchases her in a slave auction, she soon understands that life as a slave does not have to be miserable and mindless.
I am looking forward to uncovering a few more unanswered questions in the next installment.

bookienookiereviews.blogspot.com

What would you do if you found a girl who was being held as a sex slave against her will? Stephan Coleman does the only thing he can think of: he buys her off the sadistic creep who has been abusing her for the past ten months. But Brianna is broken and confused about her new Master’s motives. He bought her – so he must be just like her old Master… right?

Don’t be put off by the title or the cover image – Slave by Sherri Hayes is a book about the BDSM world without too many of the graphic images one might expect with this subject matter. We uncover details of Brianna’s life with the evil Ian as she gradually warms to Stephan and tells him about her past, but the sadism isn’t dwelled upon in detail. The story instead focuses on her recovery and her blossoming relationship with Stephan.

Hayes writes in alternating points of view so the reader can see how each of the two protagonists feel about the other, feelings neither of them believe they can communicate openly. Brianna’s mistrust and fear slowly diminish, and Stephan realizes his friends may be right about him after all.

Slave leaves the reader with many questions about what will happen next in their relationship. What about Brianna’s father? And who is Anna? I look forward to finding out when the sequel is published next year. Andrea, Goodreads

ARC REVIEW - Trust by Sherri Hayes

Book Four of Four in the Finding Anna series.

The Finding Anna series consists of four books, Slave, Need, Truth and finally, Trust. You simply must read the first three books before reading Trust. Otherwise nothing will make sense in the final book. My review is for Trust, but by necessity, I will be focusing on the series as a whole. The first thing you should know about this series is that it is not as dark as it may first appear. Sure there are dark moments, but nearly all of them are in flashbacks. This series is really about survival and recovery. The books are told from alternate points of view, which really helps us get into the heads of both characters.

Unlike anything I've ever read before, Finding Anna starts off where other books end. In most books the rescue is the final act. It is assumed that after the person has been rescued, from whatever fate they needed rescuing from, they lived happily ever after. But with Finding Anna the rescue is only the beginning. The real work comes after the rescue.

The first book, Slave, tells the story of Stephan Coleman, an experienced dominant, currently without a submissive, who learns about a young woman being kept as a sex slave against her will by a brute named Ian Pierce. This girl is Brianna Reeves. Not seeing any other way to help her, Stephan purchases Brianna from her captor and takes her home with him. He soon discovers just how broken Brianna had become under the cruel thumb of Ian and his thug friends. Being infinitely patient, he slowly brings Brianna back from the edge and helps her rediscover her true self.

Through the course of the first three books, we slowly learn more about her history, the culpability her father had in her slavery, the mother she loved, but could not save. And we learn, through her flashbacks, about the horrible tortures forced upon her for 10 months while she was held captive. Stephan is an amazingly patient man, who finds himself caring for her much more than as just another submissive. And Brianna finds that this man who purchased her is not the monster she feared he would be. At the end of the third book, Truth, Brianna makes a sacrifice to help save Stephan.

The final book in the series, Trust, picks up two months later. This final book is a very satisfying conclusion to this fascinating series. All loose ends are tied up. All mysteries are resolved. I could not have been happier with the way this book wrapped up their story.

If you are looking for a wonderful series featuring incredible characters, hot sex, a hint of darkness, but ultimately a story of survival and overcoming incredible odds, then you really should check out the Finding Anna series. I promise you won't be disappointed.

I loved this series, and I loved the final book, Trust. I hope you will love them too.

Synopsis:

Brianna is lost for the fourth time in her life. Each time was unexpected, and each changed the course of her future. The first life-altering event occurred when her mother died, and she moved to Minnesota to live with her father.

The second was when she was kidnapped at the age of seventeen and forced to be a slave. She would never forget those ten months. Brianna thought her life was over.

Everything changed again the day Stephan steamrolled into her life and brought her home to live with him. She had no idea what to expect—what life with her new Master would hold. That first month with Stephan was, in some ways, more confusing than the prior ten. As a slave, she’d known her place. With Stephan everything was new and different. He’d given her freedom and so much more.

Five months after Stephan rescued her, Brianna once again finds her life flipped upside down.

In this fourth, and final, installment of Finding Anna, Brianna must unearth strength she never knew she possessed. Stephan can no longer protect her from the outside world. She must learn to trust herself, embrace who she is, and discover who she wants to be. Only by facing her demons can Brianna find true happiness and peace.

Making Out With Blowfish by Brian Sweany OUT NOW!

Making Out With Blowfish
By Brian Sweany
The highly anticipated sequel
OUT NOW

Available from:

Brian Sweany writes a powerful story about a reluctantly maturing hero, a hero all men can relate to. Making Out With Blowfish is based on Sweany’s life and friends. He says its “as true to life as possible, just with different names.” Sweany opens old wounds with mention of his father’s death and the sexual abuse he went through with his godfather. Making Out With Blowfish is an emotional rollercoaster with highs and lows that will tear at your sole and open your heart.

“This is the part of our hero’s story where he looks back and reflects upon the man he is today. The truth is I’m still searching for him. I am still lost. I’m not the guy who thought I had found my way out of the wilderness . . . not the guy I wanted to become.”

You will cling and connect to Sweany’s characters as they jump of the pages, grab your hand, and escort you through his world. In Making Out With Blowfish, fact and fiction masterfully come together in a nuanced combination that will change us all.

In Exotic Music of the Belly Dancer, Hank Fitzpatrick had a girlfriend. He had a life. He finally seemed to be figuring things out. Now we find his secrets were yet to be discovered, his demons yet to be exorcised, and soon he will have no choice but to face them both. Gone is the boy you’ve come to love. He’s been replaced by a man you will struggle to like. Welcome back to Empire Ridge. Making Out with Blowfish is fear and loathing in the suburbs as told in Brian Sweany’s uniquely uninhibited voice.

Brian Sweany

Since 2000, Brian Sweany has been the Director of Acquisitions for Recorded Books, one of the world’s largest audiobook publishers. His writings have appeared on EverydayHealth.com, and Making Out with Blowfish is the sequel to his debut novel, Exotic Music of the Belly Dancer. Praise:
“Fans of Sweany's Exotic Music of the Belly Dancer will find plenty to like in this exuberant follow-up. By turns funny, dark, and darkly funny, Making Out with Blowfishdefinitely won't disappoint.”
–Jon Clinch, bestselling author of Finn
“A five-star treat from a five-star author. Making Out with Blowfish is a fast paced, easy to read story with characters that practically leap off the pages. Hank Fitzpatrick and his family and friends wade through issues that most of us can relate to. I laughed, I got angry, and I even cried. This flawless story will hold your attention from the first line in the prologue to the very last page. If you read only a few books a year, this should be one of them!”
–Mary Monroe, New York Times bestselling author of Lost Daughters
Making Out with Blowfish is a wonderful book for people lovers and animal lovers. Hank Fitzpatrick and his dog Chief are companions on the hero journey, they are on a roller-coaster of a ride through life together, it is a pleasure to come along.”

Brain Sweany gets an article in Nuvo on his upcoming release Making Out With Blowfish

Brian Sweany's near-true stories

by Rebecca Berfanger

Brian_Sweany_Headshot.png

In the town of Empire Ridge lives a guy, Hank Fitzpatrick, coming to terms with being a dad and husband after years of acting out. That town looks a lot like Columbus, Ind., and that guy sounds a lot like Brian Sweany, director of acquisitions at audiobook outfit Recorded Books — and author of two autobiographical novels published by The Writer's Coffee Shop, the original publisher of a little book called Fifty Shades of Grey.
The second, Making Out With Blowfish, on sale March 6, opens with an epic game of beer pong pitting the hero, Hank, against a couple delectable co-eds in a scene that could take place on any college campus. It's when we learn the co-eds are caterers working a party at Hank's suburban home, that Hank is about two decades their elder and that his wife is waiting upstairs — well, you can see the problems facing the reluctantly maturing hero.
Sweany has no qualms admitting that the characters in his first two books are based on his real life family and friends. His first book, Exotic Music of the Belly Dancer, based on his school years in Columbus and later in college from 1986-1993, "was as true to life as possible, just with different names," he says.
After the first book was released, his best friend didn't talk to him for a while, and other friends and family "struggled with seeing the book's versions of themselves."
He used those real stories to "capture the feeling of a first love, the smell of a girl, the pain of heart break. ... I wanted it to be like Breakfast Club meets Fight Club."
Sweany's father, like the character Hank's, died when he was only in his early 20s. And Hank was molested by a family friend who was like an uncle to him, just as Sweany was sexually abused by his godfather — his father's best friend.
"After my dad died, I gave myself permission to deal with this," he says. "I was able to compartmentalize my godfather and the monster. Writing about these emotional issues grounded me and gave me an emotionally detached perspective. Writing fiction made the non-fiction version more real. Especially with my godfather, even though I glossed over that in the book and made it easier on Hank."
Not that Hank gets a free pass.
"I wanted the narrator to be able to say whatever came to his mind," he says. "Whether it's something about private parts or his obsession with women's calves. It's not always pretty and perfect. ... I wanted to make the reader feel uncomfortable with Hank from the beginning of the book by opening in 2008 when Hank is now a 38-year-old and doesn't seem to have learned a thing."
But Sweany does leave a few things out. He says his wife is less emotional than her fictional counterpart and gives her credit for making him a better, more grounded and empathetic person, something he says the book doesn't convey about Hank's wife.
Sweany first got in touch with the The Writer's Coffee Shop, which was founded in Australia and has offices in the U.S., as part of his day job. That connection made, the conversation turned to Sweany's own work and The Writer's Coffee Shop ultimately gave him a book deal.
And his next book? Something totally different. He'll only say it's Joss Whedon-inspired and something he will occasionally share with his teenage daughter for her input.

How To Get Ainsley Bishop To Fall In Love With You by T.M. Franklin COVER REVEAL

COVER REVEAL
HOW TO GET AINSLEY BISHOP TO FALL IN LOVE WITH YOU
By
T.M. Franklin

Release Date: 12 June 2014

Summary:

Oliver Holmes likes making lists—meticulous procedures for achieving his goals, step-by-step. Whether it’s “How to Get an A in Chemistry” or “How to Get Accepted to MIT,” he has a process, and it’s worked for him so far. He doesn’t even care that the popular kids mock him. Oliver’s got his eye on the prize.

So when he decides it’s time to declare his feelings for Ainsley Bishop, the girl of his dreams, it’s only natural for him to make a list, a point-by-point strategy to win her heart. He knows it will take a grand gesture for her to see beyond his quirky exterior, and her approaching birthday provides the ideal opportunity for Oliver to put his plan into action.

Finding the perfect gift is a challenge Oliver meets with his usual dogged determination. He’ll need to watch her carefully for clues to pinpoint exactly what he should give her. And along the way, he might just learn that what Ainsley really needs is not quite what he expected.

Author Bio:

T.M. Franklin is the author the award-winning YA adventure, MORE, and its sequel The Guardians. In addition, Franklin penned the Amazon best-selling short stories A Piece of Cake and Window. Her new YA romance, How to Get Ainsley Bishop to Fall in Love with You, is Franklin’s first love story without a paranormal element, although she believes love is the best kind of magic.

TWELVE, the final installment in the MORE Trilogy, will be released in the fall of 2014.

Summary:

Will Somers has always thought himself unlovable. When he encounters a creature of myth and magic, he seizes the chance to finally have a wife and family of his own. Emma is a selkie—one of the immortal fae-folk of the sea—bound to Will by the magic of her kind, and eager to learn about life on land. She has to learn to adapt quickly to human customs, because Will is headed for the court of Henry VIII, to serve as the king’s fool. It’s a glittering, dangerous world, where a careless word can lead to the scaffold and the smallest of gestures is loaded with political implications. Anne Boleyn is charmed by Emma’s naïveté and soothing selkie magic and wants Emma for her own fool. Can Will protect his newfound love from the dangers that lurk in every shadow? Circa regna tonat: around the throne, the thunder rolls.

Under these Restless Skies Book Trailer

Praise:

I know Lissa Bryan is one hell of a storyteller, but Under These Restless Skies blew right past my already high expectations and sucked me in with just the first few pages.  It's a spectacular journey into history filled with royal intrigue, adventure, heartwarming romance, and a dash of magic and lore.  It's so well-written, each character and plot point so fully and perfectly fleshed out that it's not just a story; it's a trip back to a time when magic and superstition were altogether real, when the biggest stories in history were playing out, and when the unlikely romance of a disfigured man and a being plucked from legends seems like the most natural and incredible thing in the world.  I thought I knew what I was getting into with this book, having read the author's earlier fanfiction story about a man who stole a selkie's pelt, but I was completely surprised and more than a little blown away by what is definitely not a recycled bit of fanfic.  But aside from the general setting and legend, everything else is wholly original and altogether engrossing.

Will is physically imperfect, but it's not something he has to overcome or correct; it's simply who he is, a rarity in love stories.  And Emma's selkie nature is completely different than that of the humans she finds herself among, a difference that makes for delightful moments of levity alongside the suspense of Henry VIII.'s court  If you're tired of formulaic historical romances or their predictable contemporary counterparts, you must check out this story.  Under These Restless Skies ignores the overdone recipe for love stories and plays out a fantastic romance during an incredible time in history, complete with scandal, political intrigue, and abiding honesty and love.
-Fic Central Blog

This is a beautifully written, compelling and evocative book written around the Tudor court, specifically of Henry VIII and his marriage to Anne Boelyn. It is eloquently told, with strong characters and suprisingly historically accurate, despite the slight supernatural twist to the plot. For the main protagonists are court Fool, Will Somers and his wife, Emma. Now, Will Somers was a real person, slightly crippled and the respected ear to the king. Emma was not. It is her addition that turns this from just another Tudor politics story into a heart-breaking drama and romance. We all know the story of Anne Boleyn, and the fate that befall her, so it is hard to find a story that offers something new, something surprising. Emma is that addition. For she is a selkie, who give herself over to Will in the first few pages. Her fae nature gives her a unique perspective on the situation, being not bound by the formalities of court-breeding/schooling, and also gets her into trouble in a few cases. And her relationship with Will is just beautiful to behold.

Praise for Sapphire Blue by G.Doucette

"WARNING: DARK THEMES, EXPLICIT CONTENT"

Praise For Sapphire Blue - From Goodreads Reviewers
Average Rating 3.12; 17 Ratings, 15 Reviews (as of 20th Feb 2014)

Sapphire Blue made me uncomfortable – and for that reason I think it is an amazing book that will stay with me for some time. A cross between Indiana Jones and Fifty Shades is how I have described it to people, although by the creepy end it almost felt like something by Stephen King
Andrea (Mrs Aubergine)

Explicit, dark, raw.... not for the faint of heart!

I have found myself speechless at times after reading a book, but that's because I think I wanted to savor how the story made me feel. This time I'm speechless after reading this for a whole lot of different reasons. Lost for words because I'm incredulously thunderstruck, I think I was shaking while reading one memorable scene, that had I've been standing, I would be staggering.
Mila

Sapphire Blue is a very well written novel. It's hard to categorize this book since it contains elements of erotica, paranormal, mystery, suspense and romance...
If you enjoy books that have a decidedly dark side (with a satisfying HEA), you will enjoy this one.
Pamela

This book will make you uncomfortable especially towards the end. I was on edge for the last couple of chapters.
The story is quite disturbing, but it's also entertaining, funny, hot, mystical, suspenseful and interesting.
It is well written and properly thought out.
There's a lot of interesting twists especially at the end.
It's a great read and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes erotica.

The Summary:
Mara Cantor’s life is boring and uncomplicated, and she likes it that way. She has her internship at the museum—a job she shares with her roommate, Davis—and while it is low-paying and occasionally mind-numbing, it gives her all the free time she needs to finish her thesis. And that is just fine.
But when Argent Leeds, the internationally famous playboy and raconteur, visits Mara’s museum, he brings with him the most exciting archeological discovery in decades: the Pazuzu gemstones. Long assumed to be nothing more than a myth by most scholars, the gemstones are rumored to possess mystical powers.
Between Argent, his gemstones, and Davis, Mara’s boring life has suddenly gotten very complicated. Now she is caught up in a sexual adventure that is either the most exciting time of her life . . . or the most terrifying.

COVER REVEAL
HELLO LAlaland
By
Madi Merek
Release 1st April 2014

Summary

TWCS ED and an Excerpt from Anais Butt and the Hairy-Handed Gent by Kate Welshman

Anais Butt and the Hairy-Handed Gent (don’t let the obscurity of the title put you off) is an extremely well written young adult novel that is suitable for the younger reader while being complex enough to keep the more mature reader (cough) interested. Told in first person narrative, we are lucky to be privy to Anais’s (Ah-nay) outrageously entertaining yet unapologetically honest thoughts.

“Was I really such a dreadful person? It had occurred to me over the course of the hunt for the Camry that perhaps I was. Until this afternoon, I’d been nursing an idea that I was something of a wild thing amidst old furniture, a free spirit oppressed by unfortunates less intelligent and lively than myself. I was underestimated, misunderstood, unappreciated. The problem, I thought, lay with the petty, mediocre folk around me.

For the first time I was beginning to wonder. My family hated me. My teachers hated me. By and large my schoolmates hadn’t cared for me. My only real friend was Tess, a dorm buddy from two schools ago. Her parents had banned me from their house after I’d drawn a lovely curled moustache on a portrait of Tess’s great grandmother. Tess and I thought it looked absolutely epic, but opinion on the subject was sharply divided. Apparently the flesh-and-blood version of this particular ancestor was unusually hirsute and really did have a thick moustache, but the portraitist had been under strict instructions to produce a charitable likeness.”

And perhaps my favourite excerpt:

“I remembered Nanny Pam very clearly. She looked like an exhumed corpse with a fluffy grey wig and a roll-your-own cigarette hanging from the corner of her mouth. If you were lucky, she put her teeth in. Sometimes she didn’t. And she hated children—hated them. She’d actually told my mother that she hated her and her sister Jessie until they were teenagers.”

I encourage you to give it a go. You’re in for a thoroughly entertaining read that has it all mystery, humour, romance, and a unique Australian flavor.
